General:
Perennial herb from a branched stem-base and a thick, branched taproot; forming mats up to 12 cm wide; stems ascending, numerous, branched, 1.5-3 mm thick, 5-10 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lacking; stem leaves linear, almost circular in cross section, 5-12 mm long, 1-2 mm wide, deciduous except for hardened midrib portions, bases remain as hardened bristles.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a minutely bracteate, spreading, flat-topped, terminal cluster of 3-9 flowers on stalks 2-5 cm long; petals usually 5, white, yellow or pink, 6-8 mm long, soon withering; sepals 2, 3 mm long; stamens 15-30.
Fruits:
Capsules, 2.8-3.2 mm long; seeds black, shiny, 0.8-1 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Dry, open rocky slopes, ridges and grasslands in the steppe and montane zones; rare in SC BC; S to N WA.
